With the number of pet food brands increasing every week, it becomes harder to choose the right kind of food for your pet. Apart from advertising, pet foods are provided with little information to choose the right dry or canned food. However knowing some secrets about these foods will help you make up your mind.
The first unknown secret for pet foods is that all the pet foods available on the market use deceptive words that actually don’t define their foods. However there are a few foods available in the market that add premium ingredients. According to pet food rules, no pet food manufacturer can make any references about the quality of the food. Premium is just a marketing term used by pet food manufacturers as a sales term.
The second well known secret is that there is no information about the ingredients mixed in the pet food. There is no set percentage of fat, protein and other nutritional value of the pet food. Pet food manufacturers use chicken feet, euthanized animals and human grade meat in their foods in different concentrations. Pet foods for dogs require 18 percent protein, which cat foods require 26 percent protein. There is no way to find this out from the labels with limited information. Most of the food products imported from Mexican manufacturing facilities which supply to multiple pet food brands. This is the reason that pet food recalls are often made together by multiple brands. Hence about 40 percent of the products on a market shelf can be the same thing with varying prices. Choosing the cheapest one might just be the same as picking the most expensive ones.
